Elk Station, North Carolina is loosely based on Elk Park, NC, a bustling Avery County mountain railway center prior to 1950, when the Tweetsie Railroad depot located in the town discontinued operations there. Situated near the Elk River on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, today Elk Park is a charming small mountain town of cafes and antique stores, one of which (Main Street Antiques, aka “Janey Haney’s Junktique Store”) formerly housed the author’s tearoom booth “Serindipitea,” established in the year 2000. Coincidence? I think not.
